Where Is Asbestos Found?

Asbestos products run the gamut from thermal insulation products all the way down to household items.  The bulk of the asbestos that was used in thermal insulation would be in something called pipe covering or block insulation, which was used to wrap around pipes to insulate boilers and other machinery that would be high temperature type machinery.  

Other sources of asbestos would be in gaskets and packing.  Gaskets were used all over pipes, and pumps, and valves, and packing was used in packing glands and valves.  And those products contained asbestos right up until the 1990s.  Other sources of asbestos would be in items that were machinery.  Any type of machinery that ran at high heat would either be insulated, or would have some sort of asbestos packing or gasket associated with it.  We see a number of asbestos exposures from cement pipe.  A number of the cement pipe manufactured in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s had asbestos in it as a binder and as an insulator, and when you cut that pipe, that asbestos is released into the air.  

Household items had asbestos.  Toasters.  Hair dryers.  Oven mitts.  Welding gloves.  There were a number of textile type applications in which asbestos was used.  One company went so far as to offer an asbestos containing child’s playhouse to use in the backyard, calling it a more durable playhouse than what you could find on the market.  

So there is asbestos in any number of sources, and really it takes the experience of having done these cases for years to know when you’re talking to someone and they’re talking about where they worked and what they did, which products would be something that might have contained asbestos and which ones did not.
