Visitation is a toxic word for a lot of people because it suggests to the “visiting parent” that he or she is a second-class citizen, so we try to use words like parenting time or access. But when you get beyond the labels, the question is, how do you keep both parents in the child’s life in a reliable way and in a way that allows both parents to go on with their own lives? I feel strongly that there has to be a schedule because when people use words like reasonable and liberal, parenting time, access, visitation, whatever it is, both parents are always victims of the other’s schedule and it creates a situation where the parents are gonna constantly be in conflict, so you always start with a schedule. They can modify a schedule, but at least when you have a schedule as a default, both parents know when they can make time for themselves, and that’s critical after a divorce because both parents have to start life as single individuals and they need to in a sense reinvent themselves. They can’t do that if they’re always waiting to know what the other parent is gonna do. I mean that was their marriage. And to have a schedule shows that the parents respect one another and respect one another’s rights to go on with their lives.
