People often ask me what are the grounds for divorce in New Jersey and there are several. We have the traditional fault grounds which are adultery, extreme cruelty, desertion, alcoholism, incarceration and sexual deviance.
In 1971 we got the no-fault statute which merely required the parties to be separated for 18 months with no reasonable prospect of reconciliation. In February of 2007 Judg- -- Governor Corzine signed into law our most recent ground for divorce which is irreconcilable differences. And that is probably going to be the most prevalent ground for divorce that we’ll see over the next several years.
