Asbestos has been used heavily in the New England area since as far back as the 1920s and ‘30s. In the Boston, Massachusetts area we have a number of shipyards, and they were used to make military and commercial ships for years. The Boston Naval shipyard, which is located in Charlestown, Massachusetts has for a number of years manufactured, built, and rehabbed ships for the United States Navy, and that yard was a very busy yard up until the close in the mid 1970s.
There’s also the Fore River shipyard which is located in Quincy, Massachusetts. Again, it was the best steel yard. Later bought by General Dynamics. Did an awful lot of government contract work building, fixing, rehabbing ships, as well as commercial work for private ship owners. And asbestos was heavily used in both of those shipyards.
There’s also a number of smaller shipyards that dot the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut coastline, as well as Maine and New Hampshire as well. So shipyards is a big source of asbestos exposure in the New England states.
The other source of exposure would be building trades. A lot of the tall commercial buildings that you see in the major metropolitan areas in New England – Boston, Providence, Hartford – were buildings that were built sometime between the 1950s and the 1970s for the most part. And those were popular years for asbestos. A lot of asbestos was used in building trades, and anyone who was on those jobsites during those years would have been exposed to an awful lot of asbestos.
