It’s important to remember that there are some issues in divorce that can be modified as circumstances change in the future. That might involve the payment of support or alimony, or custody and parenting time. Our law is intended to be flexible to meet changing needs of family units and so that if income increases or decreases or financial needs increase or decrease, a modification might be in order. Similarly, as children grow and their needs change, modifications to custody or parenting time might be in order. People are free to try to resolve these issues without resort to the court, and often that happens, but where the issue cannot be resolved out of court, judges have the authority to make those decisions.
