Mesothelioma in Boston

A common question is where was I exposed to asbestos?  What jobsites were these on?  Because I’ve been all over the place.  And there’s no easy answer to that, but at least in the Boston area one of the large sites we look at are the shipyards, and were you ever in the shipyard?  Either in the Navy or as a worker in a shipyard.  

Did you live near the shipyard?  Also, were you around a power plant?  Boston Edison is a supplier of power to eastern Massachusetts.  They have a number of power plants in eastern Massachusetts which are huge sites with big giant boilers, steam turbines, and miles of asbestos-covered pipes inside them.  So anyone who spent any time, whether as an employee of Boston Edison or as an outside contractor working there, would have had a large exposure to asbestos.  

Beyond that, we look at manufacturing facilities.  General Electric has several large manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts, and many of my clients were exposed to asbestos while working at one of the GE facilities.  There’s also other smaller manufacturing facilities around, and we look at those sites as potential sources of asbestos exposure.  

And we go all the way down to your basement.  What kind of boiler was in there?  What kind of pipes were in there?  How old is your house?  Was there asbestos in your home?  Was there asbestos joint compound being used when the house was being rehabbed or additions were being put on in the 1970s or 1960s?  

So there can be many sources of asbestos exposure, and it’s really through a careful conversation with each client that we’re able to ascertain where they were and where their potential sources of asbestos exposure are.
