A lot of clients ask me that very thing. A living will is a document which allows one person to give the rights that he has to make decisions for himself to another person, and many times one spouse will give this right to another spouse. So if you are in a situation where you cannot make a decision for yourself such as for your health and make medical decisions with doctors, then your spouse can actually sign for you.
One of the most important times would be when you are in the hospital and you have an injury that you cannot explain what it is is wrong with you. The doctor can actually go to your spouse and say, “Can we take care of this problem now?” and your spouse will write an okay, and that is what a living will is for.
