How much asbestos exposure is required before one is going to get a disease, or at least is in a category where that risk for a disease such as mesothelioma really varies by the person. And medical science is not yet able to determine why it is one person requires less asbestos exposure, one person requires more, and some people seem to be completely immune to asbestos.
But ultimately it boils down to an unfortunate and ironic cruel twist of fate in that the worst disease that you can get from asbestos exposure is mesothelioma. And that disease requires the least amount of exposure to asbestos. So I have seen clients who have been exposed to asbestos for as little as two to three weeks time over the course of a lifetime. Whether it’s two, three weeks one big chunk, or whether it’s you know, a few days working a side job here, a few days there, weekends over the course of a couple of months helping out a friend in the summertime. We have seen a number of cases in which there’s been very little asbestos exposure, and yet years later, the disease mesothelioma.
There’s other times where we have clients who’ve worked around asbestos their entire lives, and they are certainly in higher risk categories for mesothelioma. Some develop it, some do not. I’ve had cases where we’ve had coworkers testifying on behalf of clients of mine and we’ve got two guys who work side-by-side forty years, day in and day out, doing the same trade, working around the same asbestos products, breathing the same air – one guy has mesothelioma, the other guy has nothing wrong with him. There’s just no way to say whether one person’s asbestos exposure is so significant that it’s going to cause disease, and whether or not the asbestos exposure is aggregate or long enough that it’s going to ultimately cause a disease in someone.
