One of the common places that you’ll see asbestos is really any location in which there were high heat applications going on, because ultimately asbestos is predominantly used as an insulation, or was predominantly used as an insulation. So any type of powerhouse in which they have giant boilers with multistory boilers that were producing steam to turn turbines which ultimately produced electricity. All of those boilers, turbines and all related steam lines had to be heavily insulated with asbestos. So any powerhouse application or anyplace in which electricity was being generated is going to be a tremendous source of asbestos exposure.
Also ships. Onboard ships. The propellers were turned by steam. Steam would turn a turbine, and the turbines would in turn, turn propellers. Therefore, every ship had to have one or more boilers onboard to create the steam. Oftentimes there were two to four boilers, and those boilers had to be insulated, all the steam lines had to be insulated, and then the turbines that were turning the propellers had to be insulated. Most ships had at least two propellers, so you’re talking about a boiler and a turbine for each propeller, and all the related steam lines. So ships and shipyards are a tremendous source of asbestos exposure.
And then automotive frictions. The brake linings in cars. For years and years up until 1990s, believe it or not, were asbestos-containing, and that’s because the high heat generated by the brakes contacting the metal rotors on the car would create heat, and that heat had to be handled by the brake pads. So the organic brake pads all contained asbestos to try to insulate against the heat, and to make the braking process happen more smoothly.
So anyone who was working with automotive products or any brake products would have had an asbestos exposure from the dust from those brakes.
