It’s important to remember that your union has a specific and often limited jobs. The primary purpose of the union is to negotiate for you and other members the terms and conditions of your employment and to put those into a contract with your employer.
The union’s next job is to then enforce that contract on behalf of you and on behalf of the other members of the union. Very often the union is not going to have much leeway to prevent harassment or to address harassment or discrimination within the confines of the collective bargaining agreement.
Often you are going to have better, faster and more appropriate relief if you pursue your rights privately through state and federal laws. The union’s job is to treat you equally and fairly as opposed to all other members but the union does not necessarily have the ability the wherewithal or the rescores to effectively address harassment or discrimination.
