A lot of times people come in and they insist, at least in the beginning, that they want the judge to hear their story and they want the judge to vindicate them and tell their spouse that the spouse is wrong and they’re right, and I find that people who do that and insist on it are usually pretty disappointed, because in reality, the courts are ill-equipped to deal with family problems. And what we try to keep in perspective throughout our representation of the client and get the client to be comfortable with is that this continues to be a family problem. Family problems should get resolved between the parents, because if parents can tell their children that despite their differences they were able to sit down with competent professionals and make a decision that they agree is for the child, it gives the child a much greater sense of wellbeing. If on the other hand children see that their parents can’t even make a decision for them, it sends a terrible message, and so the custody cases in particular I believe should not be tried.
