I’ve been representing mesothelioma victims for fourteen years now, and the typical client is someone who was exposed to asbestos in either the building trades, or in shipyards. In the shipyards, asbestos was heavily used onboard ship to insulate pipes, to insulate machinery in the machinery spaces, and to deaden sound within the ship.
Anyone who was onboard a ship, whether they were working as a machinist, working as a insulator, working as a welder, would have been exposed to asbestos because those ships were not well ventilated. There aren’t just windows you can throw open onboard a ship. They’re small, cramped compartments. Many trades in there working at the same time while they’re either building a ship, or rehabbing a ship. So whether you’re working with asbestos yourself or whether you’re working alongside someone who is working with asbestos, you’re breathing the same air, you’re breathing the same dust that’s being created, and that’s how a number of my clients are exposed to asbestos.
Others are exposed through the building trades. If you look at the trades in general, I’d say the insulators are the number one category of people who have been exposed to asbestos because they work directly with the product day in and day out. However, any trade who is present on a jobsite in which asbestos is being used is being exposed to that. The dust doesn’t care whether you’re a bricklayer or whether you’re an insulator – it’s getting into the air and it’s getting into the breathing zone of the people working on the site, and ultimately into their lungs.
So if you’re in a building trade or if you were spending any time on a commercial or residential construction site any time before the mid to late 1970s, you were probably exposed to some level of asbestos.
