Asbestos Containment and Removal

Frequently I’m asked, I’ve worked in a building and I’ve been exposed I think to asbestos by removal.  Am I at risk?  

Let’s take that as two steps.  One, because asbestos has a significant latency period, you are not going to be at risk for several years, perhaps twenty years, from the time of your exposure.  The second part of that is what about removal?  What if you live in a building, what if you work in a building, where there’s significant amounts of asbestos?  

There’s no requirement or law now that all asbestos be removed from all structures in the United States.  There are requirements that asbestos not be what’s known as friable.  That is to say it’s not dusty, and it can’t create a dust that gets into the air, or gets into the ventilation system, or gets to people who may breathe it or have it on their person.  

If you think that you’re in a building or you’re in a home where there’s dusty asbestos, that asbestos needs to be either coated so it can’t get to you, or it does need to be removed.  And removal has to be in a very strict fashion.  The Federal government and most state governments have very strong regulations as to how asbestos is removed and what happens to it once it’s removed.  

Asbestos is highly toxic.  It’s one of the most dangerous toxic substances on earth.  Don’t breathe it.  If you think you’re exposed to it, contact either your employer, or a government official about getting it removed or getting it encapsulated or coated so that you are not exposed to it.  If you should be exposed, you’re not going to be ill immediately, but in ten years, or fifteen or twenty, you may show signs of an asbestos illness.  

And if you think you have a breathing impairment, if you think you have lung cancer or have developed mesothelioma, you should see a doctor immediately, and you should see a lawyer about protecting your rights.
