Permanent alimony is typically paid where there is a long-term marriage where the parties are not on the same economic footing. That is where one spouse has either been the sole or the primary breadwinner and the parties have developed a certain lifestyle that requires economic assistance from one spouse to the other so that both parties can live a lifestyle reasonably comparable to the one that they led during the marriage. Permanent alimony is somewhat of a misnomer in that it probably would be better termed indefinite alimony because it can end or it can be modified if circumstances change in the future.
